Simple Sketches Class
Have you ever sat down to create a card … and you just sit there staring at your stamps, paper and inkpads, wondering what to do with them? Or, have you ever been pressured for time (eeek, Aunt Suzy’s birthday is tomorrow!!) and you just can’t seem to pull any card ideas out of your head? Or, do you ever have the feeling that you are limited to just the ideas I have shown you at stamp camps -- but other than those, you have trouble coming up with anything else on your own?-- with your own stamp sets??
Well cheer up, my friend!! I have developed this Sketches class with YOU in mind!! ☺ I have really put my thinking cap on lately, and have been studying the very basic layouts of cards. I have concluded there are really just 6 basic layouts. They are all somewhat similar –each has a different twist. My desire is that, by the end of this Simple Sketches course, you will become a more confident stamper! That you will soon be able to pull out this Sketch Chart, grab a stamp set and some cardstock – and whip out some pretty cards – with enough time and energy left over to add a few clever twists & embellishments of your own!
Does this sound helpful to you? Well then, let’s get started!! Get out your 2004-2005 SU catalog. At tonight’s class we will focus on the first 3 Simple Sketches. We will do the other 3 in our next session. I will show you lots of examples, and will instruct you how to use any of these handy sketch layouts with the stamps you have at home – using any Bold stamps or Outline stamps of your choice!
Okay now… let’s get stampin’ !!! ☺

EASY LAYER CARD
SIMPLE SKETCH #1
SIMPLE SKETCH #1
Intructions:
Stamp your primary image on white cardstock. Crop around the image with your paper cutter or decorative scissors, or hand-tear the edges. Layer onto a coordinating color of plain or crimped cardstock. Stamp a coordinating Versamark image onto your folded card if desired, using one of the smaller stamps in the set, a greeting stamp, or a background stamp. Mount your layered piece onto the folded card. Stamp greeting if desired.
SAMPLES FOUND IN CATALOG:
Pg 58 – Vine
Pg 50 – Snowman at top. Vellum overlay. Greeting stamped on hangy tag.
Pg 51 – Tree at bottom (greeting stamped below)

Pg 142 – Dragonfly (bottom corner of card is turned up and crimped, to show inside greeting)
EASY LAYER WITH STRIP
SIMPLE SKETCH #2
SIMPLE SKETCH #2
Intructions:
Same as Easy Layer card, except for this: When you affix your layered piece onto your card, you will put a “strip” of something behind it. This could be a ribbon, tied onto the card… a strip of cardstock, either plain or crimped … or a stamped image going across the card behind the main image. Or sometimes the strip might even go in FRONT of the main image, such as a greeting stamped on vellum--see below.*
SAMPLES FOUND IN CATALOG:
Pg 28 – Love (cardstock strip is affixed, then ribbon wrapped around and tied)
Pg 32 – Bunnies (ribbon wrapped around and tied with tag)
Pg. 33 – Pumpkins (ribbon going behind the main image, knotted at the bottom)
Pg 40 – Tree (crimped c/s strip, hemp wrapped around, and tied with tag)
Pg 70 – Bear with wagon (Magic Mesh strip affixed, then ribbon wrapped around)
Pg 84 – Ice Cream (strip of c/s torn, then ‘fake-tied’ together with ribbon)

Pg 120 – Spaceship (wide, crumpled cardstock strip, secured with eyelets)
Pg 99 – Chair (image layered on metal edged tag; ribbon strip is strung through)
Pg 142 – Ladybug (ribbon going vertical instead of horizontal; tied with hangy tag)
Pg 140 – Moose (check it out – a wheel is used here to make the horizontal strip)
Pg 151 – Puppy in shoe (the “strip” here is a stamped design running behind image)
Pg 165 – Tranquility card (strip is off-set just a bit, to add design interest)
Pg 186* – Both cards – greeting stamped on strip, cut out & affixed over main image*
Pg 187 – Red card (the “strip” is a piece of hemp wrapped entirely across card)
Pg 66 –Bunny box (image is punched, and strip of ribbon is strung through & tied)
LONG WRAPPED LAYER CARD
SIMPLE SKETCH #3
SIMPLE SKETCH #3
Intructions:
Starts like previous sketches: Stamp your primary image on white cardstock; crop around the image with your paper cutter or decorative scissors, or hand-tear the edges. Now layer your main image onto a coordinating piece of plain or crimped cardstock, which is LONGER than your main image. Now, you can choose one of
the sketches above:
3a) Wrap and tie a ribbon around the top or bottom of the longer piece
the sketches above:
3a) Wrap and tie a ribbon around the top or bottom of the longer piece
3b) Fold over the top and secure with eyelets, brads, or ribbon
3c) Affix a greeting or small strip of cardstock across the long piece
Then stamp a coordinating versamark image onto your folded card if desired, using one of the smaller stamps in the set, a greeting stamp, or a background stamp. Mount your layered piece onto the folded card. Stamp greeting if desired.
SAMPLES FOUND IN CATALOG:
Pg 95 – Sleeping Bunny (Sketch 3a, wrapped with fiber and tied with tag)
Pg 102 – Teapot (3a, wrapped with grosgrain ribbon, secured with eyelet, tied w/tag)
Pg 61 – Many Thanks (Sketch 3b – note how the torn layers add interest)

Pg 119 – Bugs in Jar (3c, secured with mini-brads and wrapped with ribbon)
Pg 112 – Sailboat (3c, secured with star eyelets)
Pg 32 – Cross (uses 3d sketch, folded over and secured with organdy ribbon)
Pg 73 – Flower Pot (3d with hemp cord wrapped around & tied with tag)
Pg 92 – Cow (3d, fancy fibers type of ribbon tied at top)
Pg 54 – Girl at beach (3d, secured with hemp cord, beads are tied on ends of cord)
TWO-TONE CARD
SIMPLE SKETCH #4
SIMPLE SKETCH #4
Intructions:
Cut a piece of cardstock in a coordinating color, that is the same size as your card. Cut or hand-tear that piece in half, either diagonally or vertically. Affix this piece to your card to create a two-tone effect.
Then, same as other sketches: Stamp your primary image on white cardstock; crop around the image; layer onto a coordinating color of plain or crimped cardstock. Stamp a versamark background onto your colored card if desired, using one of the smaller stamps in the set, a greeting stamp, or a background stamp. Mount the layered piece onto your folded card. Stamp greeting if desired.
SAMPLES FOUND IN CATALOG:
Pg 30 – Elephant (4a)
Pg 35 – Punkin Boy (4a)
Pg 45 – Sleigh Ride (4a)
Pg 54 – Lawn Chair (4a, card is yellow and the green part is crimped. You may need to cut a piece slightly longer if you plan to crimp it, as it will shrink a bit)
*Pg 87 – Monkey (4a, purple piece is crimped)
Pg 158 – Moon (4a, card is white, navy piece is pasted on) (I love this card layout!)
Pg 96 – Dress form (4b)

PANEL CARD
SIMPLE SKETCH #5
SIMPLE SKETCH #5
Intructions:
Stamp primary image repeatedly onto a horizontal or vertical “panel” – i.e., a long strip of white cardstock. Or use your wheel, to wheel a panel. Crop the panel with your paper cutter or decorative scissors, or hand-tear the edges. Layer onto a coordinating color of plain or crimped cardstock if desired. Stamp a versamark background onto your colored card if desired, using one of the smaller stamps in the set, a greeting stamp, or a background stamp. Mount the layered panel onto your card. Stamp a horizontal (or regular) greeting on the card.
SAMPLES FOUND IN CATALOG:

Pg 230 – Orange card at the bottom (5b)
Pg 79 – Ornaments card (5c)
Pg 87 – Happy Birthday card (5c)
Pg 234 – Leaf card at the top (5c)
Pssst… wanna know a secret? This is the layout I use the most when I’m in a hurry. Some stamp sets I love for this sketch: Simply Sweet, Lovely as a Tree, Espress Yourself (coffee cups) and Crazy for Christmas. The horizontal greeting sets are so easy to use: Wonderful Words is my favorite, but I also like Simple Sayings I and II.
*WHEELS: This is the sketch to use with ALL your wheels!! I do this one all the time, for birthday parties. It’s just waaaay too easy to run that wheel across a panel/strip of cardstock, cut it out, and slap a greeting below! A cute card that matches perfectly with your gift bag and tissue paper --- and they’ll never know it only took you 2 minutes! ☺
WINDOW CARD
SIMPLE SKETCH #6
SIMPLE SKETCH #6
Intructions:
This is a very easy layout, but is generally best for smallish stamps.
Using the square punch, make a square window in the top of the front of your card. Stamp your primary image through the window, to the second layer (inside) of the card. Stamp the greeting on the card below the window.
Variation: If your primary image is the same size as the window, or slightly larger than the window: Cut a piece of white cardstock to be used as the inside panel of the card. Estimate approximately where you think the image would go, and stamp onto the white panel. Then line up your stamped image so it peeks through the window, the way you want it, and affix the white stamped panel on the inside of your card.
OTHER USES FOR SQUARE PUNCHES, FOUND IN CATALOG:
Sorry, no samples available in the current catalog. But it’s still a really great layout☺
Note, when you make a card using this sketch, consider saving your little squares. They make great alphabet tiles. Or stamp a small image on several squares, and lay them out in a row across your card. There are also some fancy folds I have seen done with the square punch – if you have a square punch and would like to see more uses, contact me and I will see what I can dig up for you.
